NILAI, 27 March 2019 - Sustainability is a universal issue which is currently being given more emphasis. It is closely-related to many aspects of mankind's daily life and their interactions with the environment.
Realising the need to provide greater exposure on the concept of sustainability to the masses, the Regional Centre of Expertise Penang (RCE Penang) based at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has embarked on a collaboration with the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) to conduct a programme on leadership and sustainability for academicians from institutions of higher learning around the country.
The programme in general is aimed at strengthening the leadership qualities in the participants as they introduce and implement initiatives towards Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in higher education. This in part is hoped to assist the leaders in higher education to impart elements of ESD into be implemented into the current curriculum, research and community engagement activities.
The participants comprised of senior academicians, Heads of Department and Institutional Directors from local higher education institutions such as UMS, UMK, UMT, UIAM, UTHM, UTAR, UCSI and OUM.
The programme was also attended by the Deputy Director, AKEPT Centre for Leadership Sustainability, Dr. Wan Nur Ibtisam Wan Ismail. She spoke briefly on the aims of the programme, as well as the direction ahead for ESD in higher education.
11 facilitators from various disciplines of knowledge relating to sustainability, led by Professor Munirah Ghazali as the Head Facilitator of RCE, were involved in the sharing and discussion sessions with the participants throughout the two-day programme.
